Year One
Date: 6/1/2008 4.00pm
Weather: Fine and Sunny now, SW change expected late today strong wind warning present
Location:Batemans Bay - Square Head
Author: Kylie and Peter

We write this sitting at square head in Batemans Bay waiting to cross the bar into the river. We left Ulladula this morning with no wind, motoring for the first 40 minutes then the wind gradually increased from the NE reaching around 20 knots as we approached the entrance to the bay. Low tide was at 1pm so we are waiting for the tide to rise enough so we can cross the now breaking bar.
All the beaches in the area are still shut do to large swells, but offshore was smooth and clean.

Yesterdays sail from Jervis Bay to Ulladula was marred by light winds and occasional showers. The trip was incredibly slow, we averaged just 4.7knots and had to motor the final half hour as the wind died completely. Upon entering Ulladula we were directed to raft up to a 35ft sailing vessel tied up at the end of the breakwall. After securing Jura we treated ourselves to hot chips and a movie in town...just to remind us that we haven't removed ourselves completely from civilisation!!
Whilst we looked liked dags there were some that looked like they would fit in as street walkers at Kings Cross.
It was an unpleasant night in the harbour due to the wave surge. We ended up moving Jura to a mooring.

K...Peter has been teaching to dead reckon and do coastal navigation, he is going to have to go through it a few more times cause he interrupted a very important bit of the Harry Potter book I was reading at the time and I might not have been listening as well as I should. I did however manage to take 3 very good compass bearings which marked our position quite accurately.

K...I have also been testing myself for sea sickness (cross fingers, touch wood all good so far) My tummy felt a little yukky as we sailed out of Jervis Bay yesterday morning but I put that down to the slow speed and horrible reflections off the cliffs as a few hours later I was having a hamburger for lunch!

We are planning to spend two nights in Batemans Bay however with the wind forecast we might stay a little longer, we will just wait and see.
